If you’re new to strength training, you may want to start without weights and simply use your own body weight as resistance. When that becomes easy, you’ll be ready to move up to light weights. You want to choose cardio activitives that you enjoy doing. If you like walking indoors you can get a treadmill. If you enjoy being outdoors you can walk around your neighborhood or a local park. Other things include bike riding, aerobics, dancing for fitness–whatever you enjoy doing. Just do it every day and stick with it. As your endurance increases, you can try other activities and increase the length of your workouts.

Balance and Flexibility

Yoga is great for working on balance and flexibility at the same time. Yoga poses can get your heart rate up, but most of the poses are very gentle and become easy to do very quickly. Don’t think you have to look like the instructor. These people have been practicing for years and are very flexible and have amazing balance. You will work up to these levels over time, but if you never get that flexible, that’s okay too. Any flexibility is better than stiff and tight muscles.

Yoga can also be very relaxing, believe it or not. It’s also great for calming your mind and helping you focus. Staying flexible can keep you from getting stiff as you grow older. When you suffer from a decreased range of motion, you are more susceptible to injuries. Staying flexible will help protect you.

Using yoga poses to learn balance will also help you in other areas of life. It will make going down stairs easier. Many people get dizzy on stairs. This is generally due to a lack of balance. They feel off center and worry about falling. Gaining balance will help you in these types of situations and can also keep you independent and mobile as you age.
